How a Toilet Flushes

When the tank lever's handle is pressed, it lifts the flapper/tank ball by a chain/wire. This opens the flush valve and releases water through the rim into the toilet bowl. As more water enters the bowl, the volume and velocity of water flowing over the dam also increases, creating a curtain of water through the passageway, creating a partial vacuum -- the start of siphonic action. The curtain of water prevents air from entering the passageway through the outlet. As incoming water continues to accelerate, more of the air in the down leg of the passageway is displaced. When the passageway is filled, a good flush or siphon action is created. As soon as the level of the water in the bowl drops to the level where air is again introduced into the passageway, the siphon is broken.

Once the tank is empty, the flapper/tank ball drops back onto the flush valve seat, and the fill valve triggers an influx of fresh water into the tank. The fill valve float cup/float ball rises with the water until the preset refill level is reached.

Toilet Trouble?

Clogs
Clogs – The word itself seems unpleasant, but homeowners know that a clogged toilet is about as inevitable as property taxes. A clogged toilet is good for plumbers because many of their jobs originate with an S.O.S. to get a toilet draining properly. Clogging is probably one of the most common and most irritable of toilet problems.

Most toilet clogs are the result of curious kids who stick anything from toys and other items down the toilet to see if it will flush. Clogs can be also be caused due to accumulation of hair and soap or toilet paper.

Low-flush toilets
Due to recent water conservation requirements, all toilets made for use in the United States can consume no more than 1.6 gallons per flush. Older toilets, made prior to the 1994 law, used as much as 3.5 to 5 gallons per flush. While numerous consumer surveys prove that the great majority of 1.6-gallon-per-flush toilets work very well, many people find themselves needing to flush twice because of a poorly flushing toilet. This causes them to use twice the amount of water thereby defeating the purpose of the 1.6 gallon flush.
